What to get for your new puppy.
-
Collar.
Your pup will need a collar that is adjustable as it will be growing rapidly at this stage! We recommend a collar between 10" - 14”. We encourage you to get a collar that matches your training and life styles. This can vary greatly depending on your family!
-
Leash.
As you choose leashes, make sure they match your collar choice. Again this varies greatly depending on your life and training styles. Make sure that the leash also allows for comfortable walking and will not yank or pull the dog in an uncomfortable way that may result in injuries.
-
Puppy food and treats.
We have had all our puppies on the Purina Pro Plan puppy food. We use the large breed Purina Pro Plan for all our adult dogs as well. Use discretion when choosing treats and make sure they are made with quality ingredients. Berners are known to be trained using strictly affirmation and no physical treats, so take this into consideration as you choose a training method for your pup.
-
Toys.
It is very important to get toys that fit the age bracket of your puppy. Small toys can be hazardous for the puppy. Do not give the puppy raw hide as this can be hazardous to puppies.
-
Crate.
The crate size depends on how long you intend to use the crate. If you are investing in a crate for the dog’s life, an XL crate would be appropriate for this breed. Smaller crates work well for the dogs when they are pups.
-
Shampoo and fur care.
We have used Arm and Hammer Tearless puppy shampoo. We have also used animal grade wheat germ oil for our adult dogs in the past to make their coats extra shiny! Berners benefit from frequent brushing, so investing in a good dog brush early on will help keep shedding at bay.
